The Beginning of My Nappy Transition
It is March 01, 2009. Today, for me, marks the beginning of my transition to natural hair. I have done this before, been here, gave up and now realize…for a while, that was the story of my life. This, for me, not only means, the beginning of a healthier head of hair, but an eye opening realization that, I need to finish what I start. Sometimes there is something within you, suppressed or not that is begging, pleading to get out. My only regret is forgetting that, to appease others. I realize now that you must find your own inner beauty and express it in a way that nourishes your soul and reinvigorates your mind. When you don’t, and instead opt to give yourself to another person’s definition of what your beauty should be, you suffer. What, if any, is the spiritual significance? I think, there is such freedom that this transition affords, it allows time to concentrate on the essence God has blessed you with. Did he not think me beautiful enough naturally? Did he not tell me that I was beautifully and wonderfully made? It feels almost like a new step in self love, self actualization and self appreciation. So…here goes. And to the hata’s….step aside and watch me shine.

So, it’s a Wednesday afternoon and I just woke up from my recovery from working last night. Today was the first day I washed my hair since March 09,2009, when I got my test locks put in. She did them with different locking patterns on either side of my head, to see which pattern would work for me. I definitely think the left side will work better than what is going on, on the right. Anywho…Still not many people know about my decision to go natural and from those that I have told I have gotten mixed opinions. But that’s the way of the world. I’m still excited and hope I can begin the process of locking my hair sometime within the next 2 weeks. I have to ask Kadyra what to do about the itching, and dandruff issues. Supposedly lavender and peppermint work well for that…

Well today (Monday) began my journey. I arrived at around 5:30 pm at Kadyra’s house and dropped off my shoes at the door. Nervous, yet excited, I was looking forward to getting things started. I picked out my five movies and then…sat down in the chair. We started at 6pm. Things went smooth, the cats were walking around the house and we were vibing, the hair dresser and I. Her main squeeze even stopped by to monitor the progress. We called it quits at midnight and 6 hours later almost 1/4th of my head had been completed. Looks like that 30 hour time estimate, just may hold true. So I walk out (with a cap on mind you) feeling refreshed and one step closer to true freedom.
